Functional pottery - art for everyday life...

The business continues to grow with the increasing demand keeping me in the studio, throwing pots... exactly where I like to be. I'm flattered to have so many new and return customers.

My newest piece is a very popular shaving scuttle.  The idea and much of the design came by way of a very opportune phone call from a gentleman hoping that I'd be interested in a new project.  Who knew that there was such a demand for 'alternative' shaving implements and quality pieces to enhance the shaving experience?  Check out Badger & Blade or ShaveMyFace to see what all the excitement is about.

Another pretty recent addition to my work is an egg separator, suggested by a fellow crafter at a show last year. I've carved a funky bird face stamp which I use to impress in the thrown, but still soft clay. When using the pot the egg white flows out of the open beak and the yolk is trapped inside.

The
cat-faced bird feeders continue to be a real favorite. Their faces and expressions have evolved as I get more experience making them, some happy, some angry, some just outright confused, but all a bit goofy and fully functional outdoors.

French butter dishes, for keeping butter fresh without refrigeration, are a big hit as are the newly designed salt pigs, a cute little pot for keeping salt handy and easy to measure near the stove.

The dripless
hummingbird feeders have been redesigned to make them easier to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. The hummers return in mid-April from their winter residence in South America, so keep these in mind for spring gardens.  They make great Christmas or Mother's Day gifts. Each comes with a recipe card to make your own nectar.

My
teamugs, with a pocket for your used teabag are a best seller as are the minipots that always seem to gather a crowd.

My work is still available at Oak Crest Winery here in King George.  Colonial themed pieces are custom made to be available at the gift shop at The George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Westmoreland County.

In addition to pottery I have several other interest that occupy my time. Ken and I harvest "Moore & Moore" honey mid-summer. The 'girls' typically supply us with enough for our use, for gifts and a bit of excess to sell at the Colonial Beach Market Days and on the pottery page here. We've become active in the newly formed Gateway Beekeepers and continue to study and learn more about these amazing creatures.  My coffee habit has also grown to new levels. I'm ordering green coffee beans and roasting them myself in a hot air popcorn popper (talk about fresh!). If you're interested, there's a wealth of information on the subject at Sweet Maria's or contact me directly for the basics.

I hope some of you will make it down to the wilds of King George to see me, my work, and tour the studio. Drop-ins are always welcome or call ahead to be sure I'm here. And as always, I look forward to seeing you at the shows.

Gateway Beekeepers (click on local groups, King George) are a group of people interested in networking and learning more about the fascinating hobby of beekeeping.

Old Dominion Soap is a small business run by my friend Carole Kindel.  Carole makes wonderful olive oil soaps in small batches at her shop on the Northern Neck.  She has a great selection of shaving paraphenalia and gift sets as well.  Check out her website.

Virginia's Gateway Welcome Center
has info on the King George/Northern Neck area as well as Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg, VA is the closest large town to us and is a wonderful community full of great shops, restaurants, antiques and artists.

Tom Gray
and his family were kind enough to take me in for two weeks many years ago while I "helped" in their studio and garnered invaluable information and inspiration from Tom's beautiful work.  Make sure you stop at his place if you're ever in the Seagrove, NC area.

Christine Lavin
is one of my favorite singer/songwriters and also helps to promote other great folk singers.  Check out my unique taste in music...
